A vending opportunity gave Tim Below the answer when he went looking for his own business
While many things have changed in Tim Below’s life since he started his own business, the most dramatic is his day-to-day schedule.
“Before, I would leave my house at 5:15in the morning and I would get home at about 6:30”, says the former construction worker. “Now, I’m able to take my little boy to school every morning. You can’t put a value on something like that. It’s priceless. How many guys get to do that?”
Tim and his wife Meghan Below have operated Below Enterprises using equipment from Wacky Fun Factory and the Gumball Factory, companies that supply candy vending machines, for almost two years. Tim says nothing compares to running his own business; he enjoys every aspect of it.
“I was working construction when I saw an ad in a magazine about this opportunity”, he says, “I enjoyed what I did – I ran heavy equipment – but there’s only so many hours in a day that you can derive income from (it). I got tired of living paycheck to paycheck. I knew that owning my own business was the way to go.”
Tim began researching opportunities when he learned about The Gumball Factory. “I knew vending was a good way to create income, “ he says, “I read an article once in USA Today that said 92 percent of people who own a vending business five years later are still in vending. This caught my eye.”
His interest was piqued even though he was uneducated in the field. “I knew nothing about vending,” he says, “I saw the Wowie Zowie ( a kinetic gumball machine) and I though it was cool”.
He knew he wanted to get involved in the business, but he had to overcome some objections from Meghan. “My wife and I got our tax return and we saved up some more money to buy a machine, “ he says. “We were supposed to buy furniture with that money. I had to prove to my wife that this would work.”
It didn’t take long for Tim to make an impression on Meghan. “I booked six appointments in one day to show the one machine I had purchased, “ he says, “I showed it to six locations. Five out of the six said they wanted one.”
This posed a problem for the Belows. “Where were we going to get the money to buy more machines?” Tim wondered. “I broke out a credit card, had them expand my limit and bought four more machines. It took us six months to pay them off. I was able to buy one machine a month from then on.”
Tim says he realize the company was the one for him after extensive research into vending opportunities. “I looked at everybody. I called everybody under the sun, “ he states. “One thing I got from other companies, they just wanted to sell me machines. That kind of turned me off. You can tell when people are genuine and when they aren’t. When I talked to the owner of this company, I really felt he wasn’t trying to play me. This was the only company who asked me, “What are you trying to accomplish with this business?”
Tim felt the Wacky Fun Factory stood behind their products and offered excellent customer service. “Your product is only as good as the service that you give,” he says. “You could have the best product in the world, but if you don’t have customer service behind you, it’s worthless. That’s what impressed me with Wacky Fun Factory. People often say to us, “why are you guys son nice? Well, it’s the old philosophy, “do unto others as you would have them do unto you.” If more people had that philosophy in life wouldn’t be a bad thing.”
He liked the support he received from the company as well. “They’ve got a system set up that if you follow it, you’ll do extremely well, “ he says. “I called the office constantly and they were there to help.”
Tim and Meghan’s lives have changed immensely since they became involved in the opportunity. “We were able to pay our credit cards off. Both our cars are paid off now. We’ve been able to pay off about $15,000 in debt this past year.” Tim says. “I just wanted to get 100 percent out of debt. That was a big goal.”
He also wanted to provide a loving, stable home for his children, ages 3 and 7. “My wife now stays home with our children and she didn’t before this opportunity.” Tim says, noting that she handles the back office activities for the business, including bookkeeping and inventory. “Nobody can raise my children better that she can. This whole business has made our home life a whole lot happier.”
Tim says the only real challenge he faced in the early days of his business was finding the time to work the business. “I had to take a day off from my job to go show the machine,” he says, “But here’s the thing: even working 65 hours a week like I did, yeah, you’re busy, but you still find time to watch TV regardless. People will make time for the things they want to make time for.”
He encourages everyone with a desire to change their life to consider this opportunity. “Write down specific goals,” he advises. “Go out and get advice from people in life who are where you want to be. I listened to relatives who said, “Don’t do this. Don’t do that,” but I looked at their fruit on the their tree and it sucked!”
“My wife now stays home with our children and she didn’t before this opportunity”
All you need is to believe in yourself and you’ll succeed, he says, “You need determination and a burning desire to succeed. Realize there are going to be some bumps, absolutely, but realize that success is built on overcoming failures.”
He also notes that the company provides the support needed to do well. “You don’t have to be a salesman to do this,” he sates. “You just have to be excited about what you’ve got your hands on. With the right product, the right support, all you have to do is provide the proper work ethic and you can’t go wrong”.
