Establishing an Account

How it works > Establishing an Account

Remember, you are not trying to sell anything. You are providing a business location with the opportunity to make money for doing absolutely nothing. You furnish the machine, maintain the unit, supply the product and write them a commission check every month. You are helping them to turn 2 square feet of dead empty space into cash.

Placing your machine is simply a matter of selecting a high traffic location like a mall, amusement park, family fun center, airport, skating rink, restaurant or any place people gather. You canu se the services of a professional locator or save money and do it yourself using some of the following methods. You decide!

The most powerful tool you have for locating the unit is demonstrating the machine itself. If you simply try to verbalize what you have by telling them about your "kinetic entertainment machine"- they just kind of stare at you with this blank look on their face. Most people don't know what "kinetic" means. They have no idea what you're trying to say. But when they actually see the Gumball Factory in action; they love it! The lights, action, music, and excitement gets them every time. When they actually see the unit, they understand the machine's value as an attraction and benefit to their business.

There are two basic approaches to placing your machine:

1. Most effective - Actually walk in to the location, ask to speak to the manager and demonstrate your machine.

2. Send a letter of introduction asking for an appointment to demonstrate the machine - from our experience, once a business owner sees the machine, most want it in their place of business. They can see how it would attract customers and that is a business
owners primary conern - getting more customers.

FIRST METHOD: Gumball Factory operators report demonstrating the unit as THE MOST effective method of placing the machine. This doesn't have to be complicated. Recently, we received an e-mail from a Machine Operator in Louisiana. He started with two machines, he now has four. This is what he did to locate the first unit:

"I laid the machine in my van and headed out to a couple of locations I knew had good foot traffic. The first place I stopped was Joe's Crab Shack. Sounds, bad but it really is a great place. I have since found that this is actually a chain of seafood restaurants.

I knew the machine would do well, because there always seemed to be cars in the parking lot. I asked for the manager. When he walked up to me, I told him we had a new invention that would make a lot of money in his place. I explained that I would take care of everything and write them a check every month. I told him I had a machine in my van and asked if he would just like to take a look at it. He said OK, bring it in.

As soon as I wheeled it in the place people started gathering around and asking questions. I plugged it in the music started playing, the train whistle blew and the manager started to laugh. It was great! I told him we could leave the unit in for the weekend on a trial basis. I explained, if he liked it we could sign a contract and just leave it in. He agreed. After setting the machine in place, curiosity was just too much for me. I decided to stay and have dinner to watch my machine.

It did 28 vends in 45 minutes. I knew I had a winner! Needless to say, I went back the following Monday and had them sign a location agreement."

""Virtually every location that I showed the machines to ended up taking one".

SECOND METHOD:
Send a letter to a location that appears worthwhile and ask for an appointment. There is some great locating software that will help put your mailing list together. You simply type in the SIC code(s) for the particular business location you are interested in. Next, type in the zip code(s) of the area you plan to operate. All the business locations are then itemized in address format. You can then import them to your favorite word processor or contact manager. It is a painless way to plan your Wacky Fun Factory route.

Send the Owner/Manager your letter of introduction. Then, follow up with a friendly phone call and visit the manager. Sometimes it just might be impossible to bring the machine with you. For example, we did a presentation to place a machine in the River Walk Mall in New Orleans. Their office was on the 30th floor of the World Trade Center. There was no way we could take a machine with us! So... I borrowed a TV/VCR combo unit and showed them a video tape of the machine. Again - your goal is just to get them to watch the unit in action. Everyone that sees the machine...loves it! Just think about your reaction when you saw The Gumball Factory for the first time. The unit speaks for itself.

If you have any questions regarding which option would be best for you – Please call a Regional Business Developer at the Gumball Factory. We even provide one-on-one coaching if you still need help. In fact, we are here to help you for as long as you own machines. We know that if you are successful, so are we.

After placing your machine, we recommend doing a trial period of 3 to 6 months before agreeing to a commission split. Then have the Owner/Manager sign the location agreement if you are happy with the location. The contract not only verifies ownership of your machine but will establish how much commission you will pay. It is recommended that you attempt to establish a two year contract, especially if it is a lucrative, high traffic location. You can call Customer Service for a free Locator Agreement Form. It is also included in your Vending Basics Manual.
